Workshop: First Steps for Healing

This 90 minute workshop is being held on site at the center and is meant to provide supportive educaiton on well-being and resiliency in the wake of mass violence.

First Steps for Healing validates the varied nature of grief and healing and connects individuals through shared experiences and emotions. While there is no manual for recovery, research highlights five characteristics shown to help adults and children heal after mass violence: Hope, safety, connectedness, calm, and a belief in one’s self and one’s community. We will outline healthy coping strategies that tap into these strengths, as well as identify maladaptive ways of coping to avoid. Participants will hear about the importance of self-care, realistic expectations, and small goal-setting. We will offer concrete ways in which community members can support their families and loved ones, paying special attention to evidence-based practices that foster the psychological resilience of children. This session will wrap-up with shared messages of hope, relevant resources, and the opportunity for Q & A.

ASL interpretation is available upon request, please send a request to info@maineresiliencycenter.org by two days prior.
